Pros And Cons – Galley Kitchen Floor Plan

The galley kitchen floor plan, also known as the corridor plan because of the way that it is laid out is great for long kitchen layouts. The work stations and countertops are situated along opposing walls, creating a long corridor through your kitchen. The smaller design helps to tighten up your “work triangle” or space that is required for you to walk between the prep and cooking areas, as well as the area where you clean up after you have prepared the meals.

Pros

#1) – Excellent For Small Kitchens – When your kitchen floor space is at a premium, especially kitchens that are longer, moreso than wider, a galley or corridor floor plan is the perfect design style. It makes the most efficient use of the space that you have available in the kitchen while preventing the layout from cutting into your work area.

#2) – Tightens Up Your “Work Triangle” – The longer style helps to tighten up the “work triangle” or area where you make a triangle between the prep area, cooking area, and clean up area. This will keep you from having to run around your kitchen like a madman (or woman) when you realize that you need items that you may not have readily available.

#3) – Great For Smaller Families – Smaller families, and when you only have to cook for a couple people, are where this type of layout truly shines. Because you will not need to use excess amounts of countertop space you can get away with the smaller design layout, opposed to having to cook for numerous amounts of people.

Cons

#1) – Poor Traffic Flow – The corridor design tends to limit the amount of people that can be inside of the kitchen at one time. Unless you have ample amount of space between the two walls you are going to constantly bump into one another while you are working and moving around.

#2) – Decreased Amount Of Counterspace – The smaller layout of a galley kitchen floor plan also decreases the amount of counterspace that you have available. You are generally limited to the length of your kitchen, without the space that you would have available for the stove, refrigerator, dishwasher and other appliances.
